Laws and Sensible Policies Together Can Improve Rational Prescribing

Several states have passed laws limiting insurers’ ability to require step therapy, but questions remain about whether such legislation can successfully address the problems that motivate step therapy policies or their resulting problems. Transparent, evidence-based policies that restrict the use of step therapy along with increased physician education may all be viable options, but perhaps the debate itself over such laws can lead all stakeholders to engage in the more productive work of developing systems and interventions capable of truly improving rational prescribing and patient outcomes.
