ME Breaks Down Barriers to Health Care

0

Maine legislators have taken an important step toward removing unnecessary barriers to care. They recently introduced LD 734, which would repeal Maine’s Certificate of Need (CON) law. CON laws restrict overutilization of health care services by limiting the number of providers in the market. Critics say the state’s CON laws are invasive and ineffective, allowing hospitals to increase prices without any fear of losing customers. Maine’s CON law not only establishes a regulatory hurdle for health care facilities and providers, but mandates that other hospitals can influence the CON approval process.
