Prior Authorization Impedes Patient Access

Efforts by physicians to ensure patient access to the most appropriate treatment can often be at odds with the financial interests of payers and their stakeholders, through a process known as prior authorization. In a survey by the American Medical Association, more than 50 percent of physicians reported experiencing a 20 percent rejection rate from insurers on first-time prior authorization requests for pharmaceutical treatments, while more than one-third reported experiencing a 20 percent rejection rate on first-time prior authorization requests for diagnostics and procedures.
