The National Institute of Health Has Big Plans for Precision Medicine

The push for precision medicine is gaining momentum with bipartisan support and $210 million in funding in President Obama’s 2015-16 budget proposal. In addition to helping lower health care expenditures, the precision medicine initiative can result in better testing with improved tools to improve preventive care. The head of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions calls precision medicine “one of the most exciting new frontiers in medicine.”

But in order to get to precision medicine, the National Institute of Health (NIH) has announced plans to uncover environmental, behavioral, and lifestyle information and tissue samples from one million people. To read more about the NIH’s precision medicine plans, head here.
